I'm not just speaking about the scammers. It shouldn't involve ego, but for some it does. For some it's like ha, you couldn't figure that out when it's right in your face. For some it's like ah aren't I such a nice guy for showing them the way out. If you ever venture into some "psychic" chatrooms have a look around. Don't just read what they say, but let yourself feel what is actually coming from some. Perhaps to you, you would call them scammers, and we might just be discussing semantics. |
Now we're on the same page and I understand what you are saying. Thanks for clearing that up. I don't recall if I have ever been a chat room where readings are done.. if I have been it was back in the mid 90's and probably wasn't worth remembering. I'll have to sign on to AOL (I have to install it first) and check it out and see what you are seeing.

| Is it ego then to say that in my opinion some readings are damaging and the seeker would have been better off flipping a coin? |
I understand this was a general question for all parties participating in this thread but I honestly can't see outside of the box on this one because I know myself and I know when I do one I am not thinking about me, but the person I am reading.. if I read it's because I genuinely want to help. I cannot answer for other people, only for myself. So answers may vary.. but I would hope that most people, especially on this forum do it because it's in their heart to help, not to coat their ego.
To ask if it is 'ego' that your opinion in some readings are damaging and the querent would be better off flipping a coin I don't feel falls under the realm of doing a reading out of ego. It falls under the realm of you feel a particular reading was a poor a judgment call by the reader whether they were aware of it or not. I would say it falls under an opinion, which everyone is entitled to and it should be respected. And I agree, some readings can be damaging and stunt a person or mislead them whether deliberate or not. Ultimately it is the querent's choice how they interpret the information being given and what they choose to do with that information. I guess it's a lot like a parent telling a child not to touch the stove because it's hot, but sometimes the child needs to find out for himself and sometimes gets burned.

Surely ego is in all of us? Isn't ego is one of the tools that builds confidence. It is the ego that we bolster and build up which then enables us to stand on our own two feet. Humility, and modesty, two different sides that keep our ego's in check?

It depends on the context of the usage of ego. Everyone needs affirmations, especially if you are doing a reading for someone it is very helpful to get feedback such as "Yes, you are on the mark" or "No. I have no clue what you are talking about." As a generality it is indicative of our own progress if we need to work on it to better hone our abilities or to give it up all together because we suck at it. Back to the context of doing readings, if you are getting positive feedback, it builds confidence which encourages the reader to do more readings. And you and sidewalk bends could be right, someone who receives encouragement may only be looking to point themselves out and attention whore themselves by saying "Look at me! Look at me! I'm great and I know all of the answers!" But then again, I am sharing my perspective, perhaps for some ego is involved. Only those who read this thread or have thought about it can ask themselves this question and know the motive behind it.
Good questions and excellent points made! Even though the train has wandered off the tracks, what everyone brings up is very thought provoking for anyone who reads it
