Not good:
| Quote: |
There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

but what do you mean by 'psychic readers' exactly? it's very easy to take biblical quotes out of context; rarely does anybody add who wrote that verse, when they wrote it, where they wrote it, or provide any details surrounding it from a historical, culturally, or more specifically the Hebraic perspective in which it was written. how many non-Jewish people who quote the bible even know anything about Judaism?
By the way, I'm not picking on you MissEm; I just think that your quote doesn't answer the question so easily.
The bible is full of people who could be considered psychic depending on your definition; but I don't know what your definition is. But consider Daniel for instance. Daniel interpreted dreams. What about Moses? He saw a vision of a burning bush. What about Abraham? What about Noah? So many people in the Bible could be considered as "psychic" and they have come to be known as God's prophets.
Some people have an ability for reading others, this doesn't mean they should, and it doesn't mean if they do it will be something you need, many are liars and don't even realize it about themselves. Anyone can call themselves psychic. Even people who are not psychic can convince themselves that they are and will consult people with good intentions. Most psychic readings done in the west are cold readings which are basically feeding off what you tell them, and using general wording to make it sound they are actually telling you something personal; its just a psychological game of talking a lot and not really saying anything.

Hi Brother-Minos
I just wanted to input my understanding of a cold reading. A cold reading is done where the psychic has never met the sitter before. It is different from the one in which there may have been previous contact or one in which the psychic has a certain amount of information already about the person being read for e.g a past client, a friend of the family etc.
werasx
As for what the bible mentions regarding psychics etc there has been other notes in the Bible regarding the use of psychic devices e.g dowsing
Such as when Moses and Aaron used a 'rod' to locate water. I'm not sure where abouts it was in the bible however. I also am aware that the Bible The old Testament makes refrence to dream interpreations frequently too. The importance of dreams and their meanings were prominent in the writings of the Early Church Fathers, including St Augustine right up until the time of St Thomas Aquinas 1225-1274. Who regarded dreams as insignificant for several hundered years afterwards it was then that they were no longer seen as importnant.
I think the Bible even makes a reference to the evil eye as too does the Koran. This is a belief that a negative energy is transmitted to another person with a glance or lingering look from a malevolent person.
The Bible does make mention of the silver cord. The cord of life that when extinguished or severed the physical body shall die...
Remember him ~ Before the silver cord is severed,
or the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
or the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it
(Ecclesiates 12: 6~7)
Spitting also was supposed to ward of evil and theres a refrence to its use also in the bible......hmmmmm ok maybe thats going too far for me I got carried away. There are many mentions everywhere that psychic work is sinners work and there are also many refrences that it is holy and to be accepted as a wonderful gift. It depends to where you choose to focus your energy to get the response 'you' need.
I am enjoying this conversation actually and would love other peoples views also.....
