It just happens..lol.. Ive never questioned it.. but Ill try here.
- poetry is oft more personal than prose.. except I suppose a diary entry.
- I guess song lyrics.. music in our head with or without sound, dark or light.
- haven't got anything long to say.. something just wants to be said in a few words..
- explore emotions.
- want to be obscure
- paint abstracts or create a collage instead of a photograph or a data entry image.
- licence to break rules, such as grammar and things..just to put it the way I want it instead of what I'm told is right. ( freestyle )

you are misled FaceValue, you may be talking about 'Why do you write poetry' thread. this is 'what makes you write poetry'. if you write poetry, you would understand the difference between the two.
StormGirl Blue, how does it just happen? if you want to write, you can write lines after lines. how come you start writing poetry and not a paragraph or an article? do you understand my point?
