I am curious about one thing!
When we are born, the sign on the eastern horizon is the rising sign and the sign on the western horizon at that moment is the setting sign (7th). Given that we are not closer to either horizon, or in other words, equidistant from the eastern and western horizon, why do people focus so much on the eastern horizon and not the western horizon, which has the same weight on the nativity given its distance!
And, why should the western sign be not more important if the eastern sign has risen less than 15 degrees? In other words, more of the western sign is in the visible sky than the eastern sign? :-)
What does the august forum think?

hmmm...
interesting point RR ji, well, I know u can write a whole book full of questions and things we take for granted and never stop once to ponder upon.
as for this....i guess because as the name suggests it is the RISING sign... in fact, if I think of it as not just a rising sign but a rising degree, then I can think of it as a degree that wasn't there at all before the epoch and actually marks the time, is synonymous with that time.... on the other hand if I think of the setting degree (the western sign), it was there before the time and actually marks the end of that time.
I know its a strange way of thinking, but none the less it really is an intriguing question, wht do u think RR ji, I am sure u must have a good explanation for all this.
regards
sahil

Good point Sahil! I think likewise. Horoscopes are primarily used to foretell trends and future, so that which has just risen and must remain in view (visible hemisphere) for some time would be useful.
However, it is all cyclical and since we use the entire 12 houses and not just the visible or invisible houses, one must remain mindful of the invisible hemisphere too. One may view the northern sky as the worldly reality while the southern sky remains the reality of potentials, the seeds of manifestation. It will help to ponder upon this construct and see how 12, 11, 10, 9 and 8 fit in the worldly visible view and the remaining (2-6) in the spiritual realm with the 1st and 7th the transition between the two realms, the NODES of transformation.
Stay away from the basic assignments such as 2nd for acquired wealth, family, fifth for children, and on the other side, the 8th for hidden enemies, obstacles and occult!

Rohini Rajan, i find your quereies and posts very interesting. Which would be the best site/book to begin a study in Vedic astrology. Also i have three queries concerning astrology.
One is, many astrologers have told me one should not study one's own horoscope.
A child's horoscope can only be charted but not analyzed until adulthood.
Is the time/place of birth and death predetermined.
Thanks in advance .
Regards
Radha

Edited quote for brevity and reducing confusion amongst readers if any!
The name is Rohinira<N>jan, ms. :-)
I have personally always avoided studying my own chart and using it as the gold standard for testing rules and tenets. I am not self-realized or even fully realized! This practice/stance has never gotten in my way as far as learning astrology or practicing it over the last few decades.
*Adult* is a label that is shifting with time and location! Is it 12 (classics), or 16 or 18 or 21? Or 25 (when writing a will!) ...
If it is a minor and it is a parent who seems concerned, and there is an issue (birth defect, autism, etc) then age is not a deterrant. So -- case-by-case!
Regarding the time, date, place of DEATH being predetermined, I can only answer that if you search and get back to me with definitive evidence that the time, date, place of BIRTH were predetermined!
Fair enough?
Regards,
Rohiniranjan
