The limiting factor is when the book is made Holy.  Then no one wants to change or fix the errors (and every book has them) to agree with the more modern thoughts and ideas.  There is no flow in following a book with rational thought applied.

Well isn't it that the so called religious path exists because of the 'holy book', written by some bloke who wanted to control things that were happening around him/her.

The point is....there are the big 3 religions - Islam, Jewish, Christianity - they all have a book.  But many a thinking group has formed where other information is available and no one book contains the whole message.  In that way the religion can move in the flow of modern thought and keep growing in stature.

If you are total self dependent then not, but then you would always need something that can give you direction

Zoroastrianism was organized around the height of Greek civilization in ancient Iran, their scripture (Gathas) point to a life path that is seen as more a reiteration of a time and life path when people understood spirituality in relation to physical science much better, such as in the Golden Age--
