Imam Bukhari, compiler of the traditions of the Prophet of Islam, noted; "Mohammad once told of how three men went on a journey and had to shelter for a night in a cave. Suddenly, a stone fell at the entrance, leaving almost no space to exit. They were afraid and said. "Now let us pray to Allah, reminding him of anything good we did, so that in return He may help us."
One prayed, "O Allah, I had only a few goats to feed my family with. I used to take them out to grase. Once I returned so late that my old parents had gone to bed unfed. I took them goat milk and since they were asleep, I didn't disturb them. I stood by their bed the whole night, ignoring my hungry children. When my parents awoke, I gave them milk first, then to my wife and children and I drank some last. If you think I did well, please help."
The stone moved slightly but not enough.
The next man reminded Allah, " I had a niece, whom I fell in love with. Once, when she asked for help, I gave her 120 dinars on the condition that she would fulfil my desire. De to poverty, she agreed and offered herself. But before I could do anything, she told me meekly, "O good man of Allah, why do you abuse me so? You should be afraid of God." Hearing that, I let her go free with the money. If that was good enough, please will you help, oh Allah?"
The stone moved again, but not enough.
The third man now said, "I employed laboureers and paid them on time. But once when a labourer disappeared and I could not find him despite searching sincerely, I kept the money and it enriched me further with more goats and a slave. Later when he returned, I gave him his dues plus what I earned from them. If that was right, please free us now." And finally they were out.
