"Hatred corrupts the subject not the object." (Lacey Baldwin Smith)
Hatred corrupts the subject (the one who hates) not the object (the one
who is hated).
Do you hate someone? Do you want to stop hating them? If so, here is how
to set yourself free from hate.
* Free Yourself: Just knowing that - hatred is much like you drinking
poison and expecting someone else to die - can motivate you to stop
hating. Look at it this way: if you hate someone because of what they did
to you or failed to do for you, they have already hurt you. Why go on
letting them hurt you by hating them? You have to throw out the cup of
poison and agree that you will never drink in another drop of hatred ever
again.
* Wasted Energy: When you spend energy hating another person, it does not
effect them... other than by filling the energetic space between you with
hate. What hate does is hurt you: it wastes your time and energy as well
as hurting you physically (lowering your immune response, increasing your
stress, straining your heart and other major organs), mentally (impairing
your judgment), and emotionally (opening you to depression and anxiety).
* Wasted Time: When you spend time hating another person, it does not
effect them... but it wastes what you can never get back... your precious
time. Decide right now that this person you hate is no longer worth one
more nano-second of your time! If you feel your thoughts drifting back to
that person you hate, stop, say "nanosecond" in your mind, and then
intentionally switch your focus to a pleasant memory. You will find that
this starves the object of your hate of any attention in your mind... and
soon you just stop thinking of them.
* Switch Focus: So if you want to stop hating someone, decide right now
what you want to change your focus to instead. There are so many better
things to think about instead like... your hopes and dreams for a better
future, your loved ones, your memories of happy times, whatever interests,
inspires, or moves you, and so on. Soon you will find that you have
stopped hating and that you have started loving your life.

I think the problem is not the Hatred itself, Hatred can be used as a powerful tool for good (im fairly sure that after uncovering the camps of WWII that allied soldiers horrified by the news would have redoubled any and all efforts to capture those responsible).
Rather than address the hatred itself perhaps address what is causing the hatred? Rather than simply discard it, think. Why do i hate this person/idea/object? Who is at fault (if anyone)? and What should i do about it?

Pravin, I find all these ideas easy to understand and agree with on a mental level, but hatred is basically an emotion, and one I can hardly cope with. It seems to feed on itself and gets my thoughts going in an endless loop. It is nearly as if some dark corner of my mind were trying to make me believe I WILL feel better hating that person or situation, even if I know it not to be true when I am in a relaxed mood.
As LordLeckie says, I believe hatred to be like a big neon sign that tries to keep me well away from those things that might be hurting me. Maybe if I did not dwell on them a little the warning would be less effective?

I always think that hatred is there for a reason. You need it to stop you from doing something thats going to hurt you. Its a difficlt emotion to sustain as it requires alot of effort to hate something for a long period of time. So perhaps the hatred turns into something more effective like determination, dislike, distaste and so the warning becomes a lesson?

Nice thread.
For me hatred is a cancer, the more time and energy I give it the larger it gets and the more it eats at me. No time or energy into hatred and putting my time and energy into forgiveness instead, I feel tons better.
