When I was 9yrs old I was laying in bed with my eyes closed. I suddenly felt the need to open them and roll over. So I did. Standing at the foot of my bed was a spirit. He was an old man I had never seen before he was standing there smiling he tilted his hat to me and then I felt very sleepy. I rolled over and went back to sleep.
The next day I told my parents about it and they started digging up old photos. I looked at a ton of photos of older men. The images were starting to blur till I saw it. It was a picture of my great-great grandfather. He was wearing the identical suit I had seem him in. And the same friendly smile.
It was christmas time and we had driven past the cematary where he was buried (I hadn't known this at the time).
He gave me a sense of piece at the time and I was not afraid of him at all I wouldn't mind seeing more peaceful spirits like him.
But I have not had any spirits visit me that I know of since. Someone once told I could had told them to stay away by developing a fear of them. Also they said a may never be able to see a spirit again because of this. Is this true?

my grandmother use to say he was my protector...

maybe he is there to look after you ..and maybe u just dont see him now

As children we are wide open to all thing in our world. As we grow up others tell us that certain things do not exist and over time we by into these things that others believe or do not believe. Your grandfather could have just come by to say high to the family. Or he could be walking with you and watching over you in this life.
When the spanish came to South America, the natives said that they just appeared on the beach. No one could see the ships that brought the Spanish to their shores. But the tribal shaman noticed the waves were acting funny out in the harbor. He decided to sit and study the waves, and after awhile the ships appeared. Then the Shaman went to the people and told them what he say. And within a few days the whole tribe could see the ships.
The point is that our minds can and do block out things that we are not used to. I have seen this same thing happen when UFO's have been around. One time 28 people I was with had an encounter with the starborn. 25 people could see their ships flying over us. 3 people were looking right at them, but could not see them.
There is alot in our world that we block out. And we as humans are far more than we realize.
