Hallowe'en", is a contraction of "Hallow Evening", derived from "All Hallows Eve", celebrated on October 31st, the Christian name for the holiday. "Samhain" which is the proper name for this holiday, is celebrated at the full moon (at the end of October, end of the Pagan year), and is said to be when the veil between the spirit world and the earthly world is the "Thinist", thereby making it easier to contact those in the spirit realm.
Contacting the spirit realm can be dangerous though, one must take care when doing so. When conducting a "seance" on this night, all those in the spirit realm are able to come through, not just those whom you call, so both positive and negative energy must be prepared for.

Samhain is the end of the Pagan year. It is October 31.
It is the time when the veil is thin and we honor those who have passed in the past year. Also can honor that which gaves it's life that we may live, crops, animals that were slaughtered.
It is also the New Year.
Samhain is one of the Sabbats, on of the cross quarter events.
