The term Heathen derived from individuals who felt distant from the God enclosed within the gothic walls of The Church of England who instead worshipped outdoors on the heath. Gradually, they came to believe that there was more of God on the heath than inside the church and came to revere nature itself as god. It is only members of the organized church that use this term to mean irreligious or uncivilized, due to their "with us or against us" philosophy. Heathens used the historical name imposed upon them by the church with both disdain and pride.
