numerology works by ascribing a symbol, in this case, a number to a harmonic frequency.  it is said that the world was created in the beginning with the sound "aum", and that all of life that came after that was a variance in that original frequency.  the systems of numerology are similar to the schools of astrology ... each one works under the basis of their construct, philosophy and intent.

repetition, patterns and cycles of symbols (or numbers) can provide information that can be used to arrive at certain conclusions based on whichever system used to decipher or synthesize the symbols ... again, based on the construct, philosophy and intent of the system.

numbers are a good system of symbols because they have been around for so very long and their meanings have maintained consistency throughout the various system.  and while they have undergone change ... the most major change in terms of number came back the first millenia when "0" was introduced and, eventually, accepted in "western" civilization ... not too surprisingly, it was a necessity of commerce and economics that finally led to the acceptance of 0 as a "number".

many systems outside of the "pythagorean" system use a non-linear form of ascribing symbols, as they ascribe numbers to the harmonics of the sound rather than to the letter.  it is only "pythagorean" to ascribe a number to a sound or letter ... the ascribing of 1-A, 2-B, 3-C in such a linear fashion would likely not be the method of pythagorus (or at least ascribed to him as there is no evidence that he was actually a real person from the 6th century BC ... but i believe he existed as much as i believe jesus christ was an actual person) as his teachings were based on harmonics of sound and the geometrics of shapes and not a linear alphabet, as we do today.  

and then you can get into the geometry of numbers and enter into the realm of sacred geometry versus harmonics and numbers, and well ... those are university courses.  you begin to study that aspect of numerology in high school geometry ... if you start there and can get to the pyramids and how that energy works, you've come a long way, baby!

why the linear ascribing of numbers to the alphabet works ... there's no real answer to that because it is not based on harmonics in the least.  but it does work.  i postulate that it works because the current english alphabet is based on a compilation of symbols for harmonics that have developed since the beginning of symbols, and their position in the alphabet linear order is based on the evolution of those symbols over time, hence giving it a linear connection ... e.g., A, comes from the first consistent symbol used for the same thing, it goes back to alpha and before that to the simple line.  as humans evolved and needed more symbols ... obviously, the circle was second ... so why is "o" number 15 (or a 6)? ... because it used to be "alpha to omega" or "A" to "0" ... "B" was the next evolutionary step from the line that combined the line and a circle, etc.  at some point, it was the greek "alpha, beta" ... from which the english alphabet is predominently taken from ... anyway ... LONG story short ...

i believe that the linear works as the numbers ascribing to the order in which the letters have consistently been used in a linear order as evolved throughout the many languages from which the english language is derived.  for our very linear energetic system in the world today, it is quite consistent and appropriate for this time period which is why we have success with it in a world that is largely influenced by the english language.  as that shifts, so too will numerology ... likely back to the harmonic references that predate this modern linear form.
