Why and how does music do that to us?
I've heard that everyone has a special note that they relate to. It is the one that resonates in your head when hummed. Try it, play it on the keyboard and hum to it, the one that vibrates inside your head is your note.
I tried this with my children when they were infants. I would hum the different notes slowly until I found their's, this seems to calm them. Why? I really do not know.
It would be interesting to study the corilation between the note that repeat in certain types of music, and if the listener has this special note for their own.
A theory about the beat...has to deal with our own heartbeat. What happens when we are scared, or angry it beats faster. Slow music could counter act that. While when we are needing energy, just like coffee, faster beats could move things along. Dunno, just a thought.

Music certainly makes a difference to my mood and sometimes I play the sort that fits with my mood at that specific moment, i.e. melancholic songs, or music that uplifts me if I want my spirits to be uplifted. When I'm giving myself healing energy I usually play new age stuff, my favourite: Mike Rowland, or Buddhist chants. Our body is made up mainly of water which can be programmed. Masaru Emoto has proved this by exposing water to positive and negative words, sounds, etc. which gave astonishing results.
