I love meditation, but I definetly think there are different types better for different goals. In the experience you shared, imo there was nothing to be scared of. With further meditation on your part it will get easier for you to get into a relaxed state and then by knowing you are in a safe place, you know you have nothing to fear. Think about the entire experience, what it might be telling you to act upon or work on in yourself....give yourself more time, and then do it again.

Being comfortable and at peace with yourself, then examining the mind through meditation is an enjoyable activity. Be at peace in all things and the meditation will give you what you seek. The tool is our own mind after all.
