Nobody in this world is a sinner and nobody is a saint. These are just pathways for energy. There is much energy stores inside our bodies, and this energy has to be used creatively.
So first, when an emotion arises, release it through your body in the form of any exercise. Second, learn to be creative. You are all without creativity.
Last night I was talking about how in the old days each village had a cobbler, and whenever somebody wore his shoes the cobbler would say with pride, "I have made them," It was an artists"s pride. Another man would make wheels for the carts, and with pride he too would say, "They have been made by me."
In these times you have lost the pleasure from creating -- there is not much left that is made by human hands. You don't create anything. The way the world is right now, soon there will be nothing left that has been made by human hands. And the joy one used to get from creating something has disappeared. If that is destroyed, what will happen to all this energy? -- it will become destructive. Naturally, energy has to move in some direction, either towards destruction of towards creativity.
Learn to lead a creative life. Creativity means that you do something solely for the joy it gives you. You can sculpt, write a song, sing a song, play the sitar -- it does not matter what you do, but do it only for pleasure and not as a profession. Do something in life which is only for pleasure, something which is not your profession. Then all the destructive energy will be transformed and will become creative.
I have asked you to redirect your emotions, and to give this ordinary life a creative direction. Don't worry, you can just make a garden around your house and love the plants and take pleasure in them. You don't have to do much -- polish a stone and make a statue out of it. Every intelligent man needs to do something creative besides his means of livelihood. Someone who gives no time to creativity will be troubled, and he will ruin his own life.
You can write a small song -- you don't have to do much. Go to a hospital and give flowers to the sick. If you see a beggar on the road, give him a hug. Do something creative which is only for your pleasure, in which you don't have to give anything and you don't have to take anything; the act itself is your joy.
So choose an activity in your life which is only for your pleasure. Direct all your energy towards it, and then there will be no destructive energy left. The more creative you are, the more your anger will disappear. Anger is the sign of an uncreative person. You carry so much energy within yourself -- where will it go? It will come out through sex, through sexual desire. It has to come out somehow.
The reason that so many creative people, great sculptors, painters or poets, remained unmarried is that all their energy was being used for their creative process. Their energy was being transformed, being sublimated. Had it not been sublimated it would have been used in the least creative way, in the creation of children. Then the energy which could have been used to create something great, great poetry, great paintings, would have been used for reproduction. So it is very important to sublimate energy, to liberate it.
So remember this, that in order to totally purify the body you must try to live life creatively. Only a creative person can be religious -- no one else can be religious.
I have mentioned some basic guidelines for the purification of the body, now a few more minor points. These first points are very basic. If they are taken care of, the minor things will automatically be taken care of.
One of the minor things that is very helpful for the purification of the body is nourishment. Your body is an absolutely physical mechanism: whatsoever you put into it will naturally affect it. If I drink alcohol the cells in my body will become unconscious -- it is natural. And if my body is unconscious then it will have an effect on my mind. The body and the mind are not separate -- they are together, a body-mind; it is psychosomatic. The mind and the body are one. The mind is the most subtle part of the body and the body is the most gross part of the mind. In other words, they are not two different things. That's why whatever happens in the mind has its effects on the body. If the mind is sick the body will not remain healthy for long, and if the body is sick then the mind will not be healthy for long. The message is passed between the two and has an effect on both. That's why people who learn how to keep the mind healthy automatically understand how to keep the body healthy. They don't have to work on it, they don't have to make any effort.
The body and the mind are connected. Whatever happens to the mind happens to the body. That's why you will have to be careful about your diet and what you eat.
First, you should not eat so much food that your body becomes lethargic; lethargy is unhealthy. Your food should also not make your body excited: excitement is unhealthy because excitement will create imbalances. You should eat enough so that the body does not waste away, because that will only create weakness. If energy is not produced then it will not be possible to progress towards higher consciousness. Your diet should create energy, but it should not be stimulating. Energy should be created, but you should not eat so much that it makes the body lethargic. If you have overeaten then all your energy will be used for digestion and the body will be filled with lethargy.
When the body is lethargic it means that all the energy is being used to digest your food. The rest of the body becomes lethargic. Lethargy is an indication that you have overeaten. After eating you should feel refreshed and energized, not lethargic. This is logical. When you are hungry, you eat; then you should feel refreshed because the fuel that you need to create energy has been supplied. Instead, you feel lazy. This laziness simply means that you have overeaten and now all your energy is being used in digesting that food. All the body's energy will be directed towards the stomach and the lack of energy in the rest of the body will make you feel lethargic.
So if the food energizes you, then it is right; if it does not stimulate you, then it is right; if it does not intoxicate you, then it is right. So remember these three things: if your diet is healthy it will not make you lethargic, If your diet is healthy then it will not stimulate you, if it is healthy it will not make you feel intoxicated. I don't think that you need any detailed explanation on this point. You can understand this and make the necessary adjustments.
Second among the minor points: exercise is absolutely important for the body, because all the elements that the body is made of expand with exercise. Exercise helps expansion. When you run, every cell, every living cell of your body expands. And when they expand you feel very healthy and when they are contracted you feel sick. When your lungs are filled with oxygen and all the carbon dioxide is thrown out, your blood pressure rises and the impurities are cleaned out. This is why in yoga the cleaning of the body, the total purification of the body is considered to be a vital necessity. So some exercise is good.
Excessive rest is harmful, excessive exercise is also harmful. This is why I am not asking you to do a lot of exercise, not excessive exercise: a little regular exercise will make you feel healthy. And don't rest too much, rest a little -- rest only as much as you exercise.
In this century there is no place for exercise and rest. We are in a strange situation: we don't exercise and we also don't rest. What you call resting is not resting at all. You are lying down, tossing and turning -- this is not rest. Rest is along, deep sleep in which the whole body is sleeping, all its activities have slowed down and all the stress that it has been under is released.
Have you ever considered that when you get up in the morning and you are not feeling refreshed and healthy, it affects your behaviour? If you haven't slept and in the morning a beggar comes to you, it is unlikely that you will give him anything. But if you have had a good night's sleep, it is unlikely that you will refuse to give him something. That's why beggars come to your door in the morning, because in the morning it is easier for them to get something but not in the evening. This is perfectly logical. This is the reason why beggars come to beg in the morning and not in the evening, in the evening it is useless. By then you are so tired and the body is in a condition that you will probably not want to give anything. That's why they come in the morning. The sun has risen, you may have taken a bath, someone in the house has prayed and the beggar is standing outside. It will be very difficult to refuse him.
If the body has had a good rest your behavior will change accordingly. That's why food and rest have always been taken in relation to each other. Your diet should b related to your lifetyle. If there is purity in both, then you can have immense movement in your life, and it will be easier for you to enter the inner world.
The same way that you need to understand how to exercise, some understanding is also needed about how to rest. In order to rest you need to know how to relax your body. You will understand this when we meditate tonight. When you rest after the meditation you will really be resting.
It is possible that there are friends here who are not able to do regular exercise, who can't go to the forest, who will not be able to climb the mountains. For them I will suggest another meditation.
In the morning, after having a bath, they should lie on the bed in a closed room for fifteen minutes and imagine that they are climbing a mountain or that they are jogging. Just imagine and don't do anything. The old people can't actually go to the mountains. Then lie down in a closed room with our eyes closed and picture yourself climbing a mountain or running. The sun is shining and you are running: you have started breathing heavily. You will be surprised to notice that you will actually start breathing heavily. And if your imagination is powerful enough, then in fifteen minutes you will find that you have had the experience of actually being outdoors. In fifteen minutes you will feel as fresh as if you have just exercised. If it not needed for you to actually exercise because the cells in the body that you would exercise are being aorused. In other words, they will come to the state that they would be in if you had actually exercised.
Have you ever wondered why when you become afraid in a dream and you wake up, your heart is still beating fast? The fear was in the dream, it was unreal -- then why is the heart beating so fast? Why is it beating, fast even after you are awake? The heart is beating fast because it does not know whether the fear was in a dream or whether it was in reality. The heart just knows that there is fear. Just like this, if you imagine that you are exercising it will be as helpful as if you had really exercised; there is no difference. That's why the people who are knowledgeable in these things created these techniques. If you put them into a small cell it would not harm their health because they would rest for fifteen minutes and do their exercise in this way.
Try this. Whoever is unable to go out can use this technique as well as the meditation for sleep which is to be done at night. You can do them both just before sleeping. The body can be purified in this way. And if the body is pure, this will itself be a great joy, and in this joy you can go deeper inside. This is the first step.
There are two other steps: purification of thought and purification of the soul. I will explain these.
On the periphery there are three steps: body purification; an then there are three steps for the center: bodilessness, thoughtlessness and freedom from emotions. When these six stages are completed, samadhi happens. So, step by step, we will talk about them during these three days and that will be enough. You will think about them, understand them and try them, because whatever I talk about is for you to experiment with. The meaning will only be clear to you if you try it; otherwise my talks will not reveal any secrets to you.
