I myself cannot make head or tails of your request, but I will give it a try and you tell us if we are way off the track or not:
Either you are asking the querent to give you a number and then you shuffle and pick up the card in that position -and so on for as many cards as you want the spread to have- or search for the card that has that number on it -how do you position the deck from 1 to 78?...
...Or you are using certain spreads that require you to count and pick the cards in a certain order.
In any case, I am afraid I have never used any of those methods. If the querent is present, he/she shuffles, cuts and either of us draw any cards we like. If I am alone, I open the deck face down in the shape of a fan and let my left hand do the picking in a random way.
Has this been any help? Or are you just as puzzled as we were?
