Thats a good interpretation I thought it could also mean

If someone disowns their values/past and re-invents themselves by forgetting their past they cannot really have a future as they have erased their past in the same way as you said if one keeps looking and thinking of a lost era cannot focus on their future.

You are also rite. One who forgets past can never come up in life. Our past , we can compare to our forefathers. We inherit good or bad from them only . We can compare ourselves to present . Our children are our future. When we forget our parents or forefathers, how can we teach our future generation. It is no meaning then forgetting our past. Without them we could not have come to this earth rite? .

Totally agree, we are what we are because of our past, our parents and forefathers to loose that identity is a big loss.
