I am new here too and you are the first one I am replying to.
Some time ago I read a quote that goes something like this: When one door closes two other open up for us, but we do not see them, because we are trying to open the door that closed".
I know that there is a reason for everything and I know that the first thing we feel we should do is always the right one. So what you did, was the right thing to do. Stop trying to open that door and turn around to the doors that have opened for you.
First thing I would do is to join some free classes (crafts, dance, swim - whatever) to meet new people, make new friends. This will help you find a job, to lift your spirit and finally to see those doors that are wide open for you.

I did end up finding a job. I'm happy for it, still struggling with the emotions though. I want to believe it will all one day be okay. I hope that it will.

You need to be totally sidetracked, busy so you don't have time to sit and think with all those emotions. Even though you have a job now, have you considered going to school too? Not college but like a program that requires hours instead of credits, something fun, you don't even have to do it for a living but interacting with other people around your age, same gender. You need to be around a lot of nice girls.
