My ex-husband just stopped child support before my son becomes 19 (in CO emancipation is at 19 or later if still dependent). I have consulted a lawyer and will have to spend thousands of $ on legal fees to deal with the courts. My ex is very affluent, I work minimum wage. I would really appreciate any emotional support you can offer, I am truly devastated.

A big hug I can give....and at the same time an advice..

I assume that this child has become in his teen.

I know that you have the law on your side.

The question is;
Do the fee you have to pay to the lawyer, and the "negative action, and feelings" you have to put yourself, and your son through, any hope of success?

We have many times seen that such persons are judged to pay both what they owe the seeker, and their expenses in court, but they seldom do, and in the end the seeker sit with less money then before, and a son/daughter that have gone through a bad time.

Just for you to evaluate, and I know I did not have all the right words...but hopefully you understand my meaning

I'm sorry you are going through this dear Scarabcameo. It sounds like your relationship with your ex is not very fluid, so talking sense into him just sounds naive. Going through the whole legal process is not much of a comfort either. So I guess what you can hold on to is that your son is still by yourside, with lots of money or not, and thaat daily life with him is something your ex missed out on, despite all the money he may have.
I sen you a big hug and hope things work out somehow!
Thank you!

Thanks so much Isabel and Rhutobello!  Nice to feel a bit less alone ...  The issue for me Rhutobello is that my son will have to start out life with a large burden of student loan debt if his father doesn't contribute anything. His father makes over 100K a year and I don't understand noy gladly helping my son -- he is a wonderful being. If our positions were reversed I would happily be my son's sole support.
Thank you all!

How does your son feel about this? What is his saying? Is he aware of the situation?

With him being almost 19, perhaps he could think of personally talking to his dad, face to face "Dad i want to go to school, I've been accepted to X univerisity, will you contribute to my education?"

It's a risk, if his dad says no he will be hurt, but perhaps your ex will be more inclined to agree if the petition comes from the child instead of you. It's something you could go over with your son.

Best wishes to you and your kid!
