I would truly like to think I stop and act in all situations but the truth is we all react from our gut. The strongest instinct in human beings is the well developed and honed Fight or Flight response. When we stand and fight we are acting. When we take flight we are reacting.

i mostly react because the situation scares me. i find myself completely clueless about what to do. i get nervous and can't think of any proper step to take. it takes some time for me to calm down, and the amount of time is not always the same. it is a problem with me, i know, and nowadays i am trying to avoid reacting as much as possible by concentrating on how to act. i tell myself "whatever happened, happened..now it's time to act. it's time to do something about it." my husband helps me a lot when it comes to these situations. he helps me calm down and act upon the situation. so i must thank him for it.
reaction is something that just comes to the mind at the spur of the moment. it's spontaneous. but if you don't control it, it takes control of you and makes you do/think/say nasty things. but if you sit down and try to find a solution to the problem, you are acting upon it. And that's a much a better way to handle a situation. you become a lot more evolved as a person when you are acting sensibly upon a difficult situation.

I usually tend to act. But I guess it is human nature to react sometimes too.... even I dont know why I do it. But yes, reactions are more dangerous and cause a lot of harm if they get out of hand. and the worst part is you feel soo bad when you cool down.

Hm, well, I consider the difference being between proactive and reactive, they're both action... It's kind of hard to explain, but I think of proaction as taking initiative, essentially creating a situation, where reaction is responding to the initiative of another or dealing with a situation.
For example I'd like to go the cinema with some friends, so I call them and ask them if they'd like to go. This is proactive in my perspective. They respond with 'yes' and 'no'. This is reaction. I set a new date where everyone can go, because I'd like for all of them to come. This is a reaction to their reaction.
I think most if not all people do both, in indvidual ratios, and I have no idea which is the most common.
I don't know - or care, to be honest - whether it's based on impulse or not... To make things easier for my own understanding, I've just decided that it's always based on impulse, sometimes the impulse just tells you to stop and think.
My own habits seem to be that I'm often reactive, and my degree of proaction goes up and down depending on how much space and drive I have in my life at the time.
