Ethical Consideration in Astrology  by  Unknown.

Astrology is an art with incredible predictive accuracy and dimension. It seems to me that astrology is more like the psychological DNA for every person on this pl net instead of the fortune telling wizardry that it is given so much credit for. No chart is exactly alike and no person is exactly the same. Yet by the patterns and energies that lie within a person’s horoscope, a good astrologer is able to discover through the aspects determined in an individual chart, where those energies will come out over the course of a given set of months, years and so forth. It is through that part of the person’s life experiences, these energies will express themselves. Astrologers, who have studied their craft for years, know for themselves what truth is, in relationship to the dynamic aspects in any given chart. So it seems that there are certain considerations that should be made in regard to being an astrologer and what information is made public.

It seems to me that the ability to make accurate predictions or see similar patterns in a clients chart implies a corresponding responsibility on the part of the astrologer not to abuse this information. When I use the term “abuse this information”, I am not just making a statement about dysfunctional gossip or the power of knowledge over another person but also in how we handle that information or give that information out to a client. What direction we give our clients is a reflection of us as astrologers. We are responsible for giving the client a positive reading even in the face of catastrophe. As astrologers we should consider the responsibility of our craft and assist those who come to us with the struggles they are facing.

This responsibility is a very personal one for each astrologer. During the course of any astrologers career is the issue of ethics. Those ethics include boundaries, commitment, dependency, confidentiality and as well as practical matters.

I happen to think it is my responsibility to give a client alternatives for any negative aspect(s) reflected in the chart. If you give someone the tools to work with in any given situation or experience in life, you have given them something truly wonderful. It is important to be honest with your client and sometimes necessary to be brutally honest. But when giving information on a negative aspect in the chart, one should never leave the client with the feeling of having bad in them. When pointing out the negative aspect, always look for and share the positive side of the aspect or at least a way to work around the aspect and the purpose of doing that. As we all know, a hard aspect is something the client asked to work out before this earth life. If they find themselves lost, it is up to us to give them at least a compass to help them get through it. Now not all clients will listen to the advice, but we have at least given it our best shot at creating something positive.

I want to emphasize that the question of astrological ethics is intensely personal to me. The purpose of this article is not to condemn the work of other astrologers but to be thought provoking. Astrologers must decide for themselves what they feel is appropriate.

My ethics are the result of my own particular experience and situation; they are the guidelines I must follow in order to live with myself.

In my astrological practice I find it necessary to set boundaries with clients in regard to my work. I do not feel it is appropriate to be on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week for any client. If someone has an emergency and needs to talk, I rarely think an emergency constitutes an astrological reading. Therefore, I give readings by appointment only which is not determined by someone else’s view of what constitutes an emergency. It is important that a client doesn’t b come dependent upon the astrologer. We are there to advise and direct the proper use of the client’s energies and talents. Not to make them dependent on us for advice because they lack the ability to make a decision about their lives or accept responsibility for what is taking place in their lives. We must remember what our true responsibility is.

Confidentiality is also vital in giving readings to a client. I happen to believe it is nethical to share the findings of a chart with anyone other than the person I am giving the reading to. The client has a right to privacy just as any other consultative work requires it. Often times as an astrologer, I find some issues discussed in a reading are very personal and serious to a client. Just as there are rights to privacy in the medical world, there should be rights to privacy in the astrological world.

Ethical questions for astrologers basically revolve around information revealed astrologically and how that information is used. The three main ethical questions are:

Is this information I should have?
Is this information I should reveal?
What action should I take based on this information?

Answering these questions depends very much on the individual circumstances. It is simply not possible to enact strict rules. Every circumstance is different so a strict set of rules may not be possible to use as guidelines.

Erecting a chart allows the astrologer to obtain a wealth of personal information on anyone, even without acquiring a natal chart or all birth information. Therefore it is feasible that a person can use personal information about a client or third party for the benefit of the astrologer. Or a client can use the information from the astrologer to benefit themselves. Think of how useful astrology could be in the case of blackmail or a wide variety of criminal activity. It is easy for me to say that it is nethical for astrologers to either exploit this sort of information themselves or assist clients by providing such information. It is much harder to follow your own set of ethics to avoid this scenario.

Even without this sort of malice, revealing information obtained from a chart can be ethically questionable. I believe that announcing to the client `Hey, it looks like you`ve got leprosy` is nethical. I think this is an invasion of privacy, a selfish exhibition of power on the part of the astrologer and very disturbing to the client, who may have no desire to know this information. I believe that there are only a few situations where revealing personal information to a client unasked would be appropriate, such as a life threatening matter. Again, we might be able to see where the energies lie, but there is no arrow pointing to the grim reaper in any chart. At least that is the way I see it.

A similar question arises when a client asks a personal question about a third party without their knowledge. Does the third party want the client to have this information? The easiest solution is for the astrologer is to ask the client to get the third party’s permission. If the client is unwilling or unable to secure permission, it may not be appropriate to answer the question or discuss the third party’s information with the client. Astrologers must decide for themselves what they feel is the appropriate level of privacy they should maintain for clients. Just remember what you do and how you handle the situation is watched quietly by many. You will be judged accordingly by other clients and peers in regard to the ethics you practice.

Control is another factor in reading astrological charts. Not just being in control of a reading or being in control of the time a reading is scheduled but control in regard to giving the client the right to control their own destiny. We cannot make rash statements about a person’s chart and hence make them feel as if their behavior is out of their control. As I said earlier, it is up to us to give them the tools to deal with any aspects in their charts that seem difficult for them to handle.

I am not suggesting that we sugar coat the truth or act vague when asked a direct question by a client. I am suggesting however, that as an astrologer, it is important that you tell the client what they need to hear but do it with tact and truth. If you are not comfortable answering a question then don’t do it. In the long run, the client will respect your values.

Finally, it is all too clear to me that astrological ethics are important because astrology depends on the sincerity of the client and ultimately the astrologer. Each person must ask themselves; what possible gain is there in knowledge about another person? Or what possible gain is there in a person knowing that tragedy is coming into their lives? Giving folks the tools to use in the event of a tragedy instead of instilling fear seems to me the better way to practice my craft. Sincerity and truth are values that I believe are necessary to b come a good astrologer. What do you think?

didn't read it upto the full length, sorry for that. i don't know much about the astroloy much but as far as DNA is concerned i know very much about it. DNA is bulding block of life, DNA stores every information about you. It has also stroes ionformation about the thing you do every day.So it is much like red box in planes but more complex then red box.

I agree with the third party thing. no one has any right to read ur chart with ur consent. my mom has done this for without asking me , which has been the cause of major arguments. Unless the perosn wants to share the reading with others...he has full right to privacy too.
