I grew up in a family of people who could do things that I have learned others could not. I was so used to it, I never really thought of it as unusual or unique. In fact, I pushed it away as I got older. I doubted what my family was saying and thought they were just eccentric. I have had a long hard road of self doubt and self hate and am coming out on the other side realizing that I want to take on my heritage. My problem is trying to get a handle on the believing in myself part. I do not want to practice anything until I learn to trust myself. Does anyone have any wisdom to impart on this?

What do you mean when you say "family heritage"? I suggest that you start reading. There are plenty of books on the subject of metaphysics available along with any other interests that you may have. Many of them will take you step by step on getting up to speed. Border's Books has a good selection, I have found many informative books there. They do help!

I had many years of self doubt myself, for different reasons.  I found out the hard way (divorcing and raising kids alone) that you are the one you learn to rely on and it makes you a stronger person.  That strength helps you work through that.  In gaining that straingth I learned that meditation and journaling help immensly in over coming things.  Not sure it will work for you, but it's a thought.
