My Soul Mate
Michelle Lawson
I saw him standing in the driveway as I drove past the house and didn’t really think much of him. All the girls I knew thought he was the greatest. I just didn’t see it. I guess I was at a point in my life where I was sick of dating and the games men played. My heart had just been broken, and I didn’t want to have to deal with heartache again.
Rachel, my roommate, flew into our apartment excited a couple days later. She had talked to Travis, the guy all the girls were crazy about. I told her that was great and urged her to talk to him more and maybe ask him out. But Rachel was shy and didn’t feel she could bring herself to do that.
A few days later Rachel talked me into going to a dance. She didn’t want to go alone because Travis was going to be there. Anything to support a friend, I guess.
They seemed to get along okay. I still didn’t see what was so great about this guy. At the end of the night, I saw the opportunity for Rachel to spend more time with him. I offered to drive Travis home with us. It was in the car that I discovered there was so much more to this guy than just good looks. He was hilarious! Travis made me laugh more than I ever remembered laughing in my entire life.
Rachel and I started spending more and more time with Travis and his friend Dave. Every time Rachel and I hung out with him, Rachel would clam up. I felt the awkwardness in the air, So I would make small talk with Travis. But the more we talked, the more we discovered we had in common—everyone around us seemed to disappear. I felt myself wanting to fall for him but wouldn’t let myself. Rachel was my friend, and I couldn’t hurt her like that.
At home one night, Rachel confronted me with my attraction to Travis. I desperately tried to deny my feelings, but apparently they were obvious to not only her, but also to others as well. She told me to pursue Travis. She wanted me to be happy because I had been so sad lately. Then she smiled and admitted that she was a lot more interested in his friend anyway.
I saw Travis the next day, and it felt different: it was like seeing him for the first time. We talked for hours. I guess Travis was just waiting for me to wake up and realize that it was me he was interested in.
Through our conversation that day, I found out he was from the same small town where my mother had been born and raised. I had spent just about every summer there while growing up. Travis thought it was great that we had been in the same town while we were kids but had never known it.
Excited, I called my mom when I got home to tell her all about Travis. She couldn’t believe I had met someone from her hometown, since most people have not even heard of it, let alone been from there. When I told my mom his last name, she urged me to find out his dad’s name. So the next day I asked Travis.
“Mom, his dad’s name is Glen,” I said.
All I could hear was giggling on the other end of the phone.
“Mom, what is so funny?”
“Well,” she said, “I never told you about the boy who was my school crush. All through elementary and high school I liked this boy. His name was Glen.”
“I don’t even believe this, Mom! You are telling me that I am dating the son of the man that you liked all through school?”
“Oh, but there is more,” my mom said. “I have kept contact with all my friends from back home. When you were little and we used to visit my hometown, we would get together with my old girlfriends and their kids. You played with Travis as a child.” I could not even believe this. “Are you sure this is the right person that you are thinking of, Mom?”
“Michelle, I am positive.”
I told Travis the next day. A big smile stretched across his face.
“I knew there was a reason I liked you so much, and now you have confirmed it for me.”
We went to a dance a couple of nights later. Brian, the guy who had broken up with me just before I met Travis, was there. He was obviously jealous that I had shown up with a new guy. He competed for my attention all evening. I became very confused. I was attracted to Travis, and everything seemed to click with us. But then there was Brian, and he had been a friend for so long. He had broken my heart, and now he was giving me the attention I had always hoped for.
A slow song began, and Travis grabbed my hand and led me to the dance floor. As we danced he held me ever so gently. He smelled so good.
The song ended and he let me go. But then he reached out, pulled me back, and whispered in my ear, “That was my favorite part of tonight, and I would give anything to have more of those moments.”
My heart melted, and at that moment I knew: Travis was the man God had intended for me—my soul mate, my true love.
Together for six years and wed for four, Travis and I are now blessed with two beautiful children.
I thank God every day for the life he has blessed me with. And I thank him for letting me live my dream with the man of my dreams—my soul mate.
