Well a three (at least) theories:-
1) Stasis. When the initial energy from the big bang is gone and the universe is as large as it gets - it stops and time continues on as now but no expansion.
2) A cyclical event. As No.1 but at that point gravity intervenes and things start to go increasingly quickly backwards - time reverses and everything happens again BUT in reverese! You are dead first, then old then younger untilyou go back to the womb!
3) The single ever expanding event - it never actually stops, a bit like the tortoise and the hare - the tortoise (the universe) goes ever slower and entropy (the hare) never quite catches up.
Cyclical sounds fun, to live again backwards.

I don't belive in Hawkings Rays, its easy to made up some thing just to prove your theory. The same way albert made up the, cosmic constant he had no anwser, so he made it up.
2) Hawkings had one of his students test that one and it will not work.
Hawkings is on the open universe kick now, he once thought it was closed,
with out his hawkings rays it's closed.
