Birds are creatures that symbolize an ability that we cannot do physically: fly... people who fly are free... so birds reveal something regarding your ability to soar the skies, to fly high to the sun, to be free, to sing song, etc...
And euhm, it seems that it's not really going well on that plain. In general dying birds indicate disappointment over your aspirations. Cages keep birds imprisoned, not free. So, it mean you feel locked up, unable to express yourself. And you seem to feel restrited on two plains...
a) on the ground, that is you feel restricted fundamentally, in the support you get, and are starting to confront it. You do this by giving your higher qualities some nourishment, and not by just trusting these higher qualities can do it by themselves, but by handfeeding them and seeing to it they pull through. What exactly are your nourishing? The number three might give a hint: your imagination, your creativity which serves to revitalize yourself.
b) the other plain, the higher plain feels even far more restricted to you. There are more birds (more flying souls in this one), it's higher in the sky, and yet it is the most restricted. One of the meanings of the number ten can be a reference to the ten commandments. So that makes me wonder whether you feel imprisoned by moral rules (higher ground pun) or dogmas of a religion you are officially part of. Organized religion aspires to tell people what their values, morals and lifestyle should be in order to be acceptable in the eyes of a divine entity, how to save your soul so it can be free. And some of those rules may seem sensible, such as some of the ten commandments seem sensible. But dogmas for the sake of dogmas, no matter how sensible some may seem, are like chains, keeping you from making up your own mind on issues. You seem to feel this imprisonment keenly. The birds aren't just caged, they're chained locked. At least the birds on the ground had the theoretical option to move freely inside a given territory. But those higher up birds can't even do that. They're pinned to this position and this position only. You are attempting to reach for those higher caged birds, and you know they need nourishment instead of just rules you must swallow without even explained why. But you find yourself not yet tall enough or strong enough to deal with this kind of imprisonment.
Conclusion: I think you realized that your ideal of spiritual learning is not to be found in the manner you've been brought up in or lived in for many years. You feel let down, disappointed in an organized religion, and feel restricted by its dogmas and rules on a moral and spiritual level as well as restricted by its community. Not only do you feel restricted by it, but you feel so let down in its intent to feed your soul. You feel as if its not taking care of your soul and is just out to imprison you and keep you from spreading your own wings. The dream indicates you are able at least to deal with the more physical disappointments: everyday life, social community contact. But you find yourself unable to deal with the chainlocks of the moral higher ground rules, as if you yourself are letting yourself down. If it concerns dogmas that have been instilled into you as a child, then yes it will be very difficult to deal with them. They have become such a given reality that it is hard to escape from. Such a liberation and nourishing will take time, just like instilling those imprisonating rules took their time to be taught to you. Perhaps try to take care of the more physical part of these restrictions: find the support you feel will be helpful for you instead of the one tat disappointed you. This support in the long run will make you strong enough to deal with the other imprisonment.
Good luck!
