What stood out to me was that you have gone from lost and crashing planes to being on board and safely steering them along the 'safer' roads?  Intriguing. I am presuming the dream changed after talking to people about the crashes that actually happened? Perhaps now you can do something about them Or you subconscious is trying to and in dreamland you are

I agree with Aegus. Something about or around you is not taking off, so to speak. It is not a lost cause, but perhaps you need some confidence in actually taking plane off the ground.  All dreams about planes are positive, especially taking off and even so flying the plane. I sense your situation to be one of - all the ingredients are there, but there is something missing to actually get that plane (idea, situation) airborne or make things happen.

I think with this dream I am always surprised that the plane misses tree laden roads and manages the corners. Viewing your suggestions, I also remember that the dream always seems to be very green ie in landscape with lots of trees, the plane in contrast is always a shiney grey.
I don't actually pilot/drive the plane... I am a passenger and often I am late on board. We are talking a large passenger jet rather than a small plane.
Cascade of Light, perhaps you are right, I am now happier to talk about these dreams, it may just be coincidence about the crashes around the same time, but I aso did have a feeling of premonition whenever I had/have them.
I have never been involved in an air crash but I do remember a major incident close to where I lived in the 70's. I can still hear the sound and explosion at that time.
I gave the background info as aeroplanes seem to take quite an important role in my subconscious.
I am happy to know that they have  a positive meaning
