Maybe the map of the mountains represent permanence while the paleontology map represents passage of time? So it could be like timelessmess vs time? Going from the map to the place where the skulls are could also fit this theme, because you are going from an abstraction to the real thing, so maybe it's like the maps are spirit but the skulls are body? Maybe the water symbolizes life, so when the water comes, it brings them together so they become people ( faces ), body and spirit joined together?
