Recurring nightmares generally mean that the dreamer is either not understanding the messages their unconscious mind is attempting to communicate, and/or is unable or unwilling to apply what they have learned in their waking life.
But if these recurring nightmares are preventing you from going to and staying asleep, I do not feel that this is the best time for you to be wondering about what these messages might be.
My advice would be not to self medicate yourself or do something that could potentially make matters much worse, but instead see your family doctor as soon as possible, not for him/her to prescribe sleeping pills for you, but rather to help you to deal more effectively with the already high levels of anxiety and stress you are currently experiencing.
Contrary to popular opinion, the human mind has an incredible ability to heal itself, if we can just cooperate with it by getting out of our own ways. The dreaming mind is like having your own inner therapist constantly on hand. For a dream to be of benefit to you it is not always necessary for you to be consciously aware of the messages contained within your dreams. Many dreams and their messages never reach consciousness, yet their positive benefits can still be felt if we can only learn to relax more and get a good night's sleep by natural rather than artificial or chemical means.
Trying to use drugs to help you go to sleep or depriving yourself of sleep will only push the fears and anxieties which gave rise to the nightmares that much deeper, where they will be even more difficult to get at. Out of sight does not often also mean out of mind?
Love, Light and Peace to you and your's,
