The amount of time we spend in dreaming sleep each night reduces as we get older, although at 45 years of age this effect should not be significant yet. There are a host of other factors which can suppress our ability to remember dreaming (illness, certain medications, insomnia, sleep deprivation, shift work, jet lag..............), but basically if you can get back into the habit of remembering what dreams you do have and regularly recording them in a dream journal, you are then much more likely to remember more of them from then on.
If your dreaming mind knows that you are listening and are attempting to apply the messages contained within your dreams with the purpose of making improvements in your waking life and by so doing better understand yourself, then you are much more likely to retain the contents of your nightly adventures upon awaking.
We are believed to enter REM (Rapid Eye Movement) or dreaming sleep on the average every 90 minutes or so, so a person who sleeps for a total of only three or four hours per night, compared to one who sleeps for 8 - 10 hours, probably has fewer dreams to remember. It is generally the final dream we have before waking up that is the most likely to be remembered in any great detail.

As the eye_of_tiger stated to remember your dreams keep a dream journal. Even if it is only that you remember seeing the color red write it down. Then think of how seeing the color made you feel etc. This will trigger other details. sk yourself did I see the sky, was it black and white, anything helps.
You can also try other things such as when you first wake up. don't raise out of bed right away. Close your eyes and try to go back to the dream and the happenings of it. Try to clear your mind before going to bed. Keeping a personal journal could help with that. You can also(now this sounds silly) try telling your self before you go to sleep "I will remember my dream upon waking." It really does help try saying that a few times before dozing off.
Also make sure you keep your dream journal by your bed side with a light source. This will come in handy when you wake up in the middle of the night from a dream. Even if you don't remember details that occured in your dream write down what you feel when you wake up, confused, scared, happy, any thing that you might have stuck in your head. I sometimes wake with songs stuck in my head. Songs I haven't heard in a long time. Or I wake up and I find myself thinking about a certain type of food. Write all that down. Eventually you will be able to remember piece by piece. It will grow and you will soon have 2 or more pages of details from your dreams. Also question your wife about what you might say in your sleep. That could trigger something also.
Well that is all I have for now. I hope this has helped you. I am big on dreams. I have did research on dreams and their importance. I have done so since I was a child. I am a picese. So I am naturally a dreamer. (just a little background on the person giving you advice) Thanks for sharing and good luck.
