To kill a rat in a dream could in a positive light be seen as meaning that you will eventually overcome your very real fears, or in a more negative manner it could be interpreted to mean that you will continue to repress or push even deeper into your own unconscious mind those aspects of your personality that either you find unacceptable, or perhaps those which you wish to continue to hide from other people in case you believe that they might not continue to like you and may not want to be your friend if they found out.
Psychologists call all these aspects as a group YOUR SHADOW SELF. But if you cannot accept your own shadow self (we all have one), you can never therefore fully realise the truel potential of your total being. We need to learn to gradually accept ALL the various aspects of our personalities, warts and all?
When a cat stalks a mouse or simply plays with it before making a kill, it definitely has the advantage both in relative it's size and strength. On this basis alone, I would regard this dream as overall a very positive omen that in the end you will not simply push your fears even deeper than they were before, but rather overpower and conquer them.
Perhaps your greatest fear might be that someone else may accidentally discover your shadow self after all? Once that fear has been overcome, you can then progressively work with each of these aspects of yourself in turn, then finally re-integrate them back into the total picture. To heal oneself is to make oneself whole again?
