I suffer from PTSD and have had horrible nightmares daily for years. Although the dreams are all different, the story line is the same: a complete loss of control.

When I awake, I am retraumatized and have a truly difficult time living in peace. What can I do?

Hi gsryoga,

I'm sure you will find plenty of suggestions and I am sorry you suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. :(

I'd like to suggest a little exercise you might try, and it may take some time but if you are motivated, focused and dedicated I think you have a shot at eliminating it.

Before bed, do a little affirmation.. make it into a routine telling yourself that you are going to have pleasant dreams. Even pick something you want to dream about and try to visualize it. I would get an extra alarm clock, this worked wonders for me when I wanted to learn how to control my dreams. I would set it two hours prior to when I had to actually wake up and I would shut that alarm off with the thought, this is my time to dream what I want. Over time, I was able to dream what I wanted to dream about. I would start with a thought walking drowsily back to bed of what I wanted to dream about, lay down and dream it.

Try it. It could help.

Also, if you are suffering from PTSD have you sought therapy and talked with this about someone? And are you keeping a journal about the incident to help you work through it?

Anyway, I hope someone comes up with an idea that works for you and may you have pleasant dreams.

God Bless!

MM gsryoga,

Nightmares represent our inner fears. This could be either mental (PTSD) or physical. I know that nightmares are disturbing. Even so, they an help you analyze the events that have caused you stress.

You can do this by looking at the theme of your dream. In this case, a lose of control. Usually when dreaming of losing control, that represents emotional problems that are overwhelming.

With that said, I agree with Angelique, before be do affirmations, and maybe some light meditation. Put on soothing, relaxing music. Think pleasant thoughts and slowly try to start directing your dreams to more pleasing things.

Also, seeing a therapist about the PTSD is very good advice.

Thank you folks for you kindness and suggestions. I am seeing a therapist, but there is only a limited amount they can do with PTSD unless they catch it immediately.

DEAR Gsryoga

Post Tramatic Stress Disorder... a lot of people suffer from this...
I am fortunate that I don't often suffer from nightmares
I have no idea how to change your dream world ... or the way
you think in the daytime... only you can do that.

I call PTSD 'time travelling'... going backwards and reliving past stuff as
though it is happening all over again.  It is really hard to pull the mind
back to now....  without help. My heart reaches out to you... I know
what it feels like ... and looks like.  Crazy, isn't it?     ((( please smile )))

People with PTSD are survivors... of the extraordinary kind.
I am a survivor, not a victim any longer... honoring  the girl-within
who survived, I am so proud of her! I am proud that I have
risen above and am a kind and loving person, against all odds.
I think you are too.  I recognised that no matter how hard any of us
have it... someone  has had it worse.

(((( HUGS )))

I had to forgive in order to get released... this was hard to do... VERY!
Please don't misunderstand, I am NOT advising that you need to do this...
I am am just relating my own experience. I remember not being able to
handle hearing I had to forgive in order to heal. LOL

I only accomplished this a couple of years ago and  it changed the way
I think about the past and I have been able to "Let it Go."  I resisted this
... I will admit... I thought forgiveness was undeserving and not fair...
to me.  However, the 'gift of forgiveness was mine. I also want to add,
there was no religiosities (is this a word?... ah  no matter!) involved in
my personal walk toward forgiveness. Yet, there was Divine help .... (wink)
I am proud of myself for being able to move forward, by replacing anger,
and fear with Love for Myself/Us.  Yippee!   I totally feel in control....

It is really nice that you came to Mystic Board...
I look forward to the other responses you will get here... We are not
alone, you know ....

May you feel peace all around you... ((( HUGS )))
