Consciousness and Subconsciousness.....worlds apart?

I have always been intrigued by the fact that often dreams are interpreted in an awake state (dreamer as well as the dream analyst). Dreams are perceived in a state when the logical conscious mind is absent or just a witness (that is why I believe we manage to remember dreams as memory is connected to the conscious mind, the thinking, logical, analytical brain, the home of dream analysis!).

And yet, the subconscious where the dreams arise does not normally communicate with the conscious mind, does not speak the same language (and vice versa) or use the same thinking strategies.

A crude analogy would be to try and view a movie that was recorded on film and trying to play it in a VCR or DVD player

Dear Rohini,

I actually do believe they "talk" to each other and both use the memorybanks of information we have stored in our lives.  Our problem is to decypher the cryptic meanings the subconscious use with our conscious minds....

Here is an example of one of my own dreams and how I made the connection.

I have a deathly fear of flying in an Airplane...(earth sign - go figure...lol)

Just before I went to visit my children in South Africa I had a very strange dream....

Bill Cosby (the comedian/actor), was boarding a plane and I was right behind him.  We sat next to each other and he noticed my fear at take off.  Smiling he said:"  You will reach your destination safely....we are flying to Africa."

I woke up with a start.... BILL COSBY?.....ACTOR/COMEDIAN?.....WE ARE FLYING TO AFRICA?.....

I lay back against my pillow and closed my eyes just relaxing and letting the dream flow through my conscious mind....then I made the connection.

BING CROSBY----------> AMERICAN ACTOR -------------->SERIOUSNESS OF INCIDENT THAT FOLLOWS ----------->AIRPLANE CRASH-------------->DIED.

BILL COSBY------------>AFRICAN AMERICAN ACTOR/COMEDIAN-------------->LIGHTEN UP AND ENJOY-------------->AIRPLANE WILL LAND SAFELY--------->BILL COSBY IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL....THEREFORE I WILL BE FINE TOO, SINCE WE ARE ON THE SAME PLANE....

It is also interesting to note how my subconscious mind used the knowledge of my conscious mind and my memories to make the connection between an AFRICAN American actor and my pending flight to Africa....

Also notice the similarity in sound between the names....

The subconscious mind works by way of associations, "Puns" if you will...and bearing that in mind...  I think the communication between conscious mind and subconscious mind is alive and well and can be understood and interpreted, if one takes the time to analyze the "puns" and "associations" thoroughly.  The main thing though is that it is ONE MIND dreaming the dream and THE SAME MIND having to do the interpretation....it's all there....

The problem comes when ANOTHER mind has to try and interpret what this ONE mind dreamed.  That is where insight and empathy as well as a measure of psychic abilities come into play, because we have to "know" what the memory library of the readee has available as material to work with, and that is a tall order.  Not every symbol means the same to every person.  That is the reason when I do a dream interpretation I try to find out what the person's belief system and culture is first.  It has a great impact on how their mind would use a symbol to try and convey a message to the conscious mind.

By the way my plane landed safely, and I actually enjoyed the trip.....

M'lady,

Okay I get it! This is the message you sent me a note about. Thanks, because I did not get a notification and might have missed it.

I see the point you are making but I still feel that we are imposing the template for the working of the conscious mind to the subconscious to some extent. We are assuming that the way the two work or the way the two deal with a set of information is similar (associations in the case of your illustration).

In fact even dividing the mind into pigeon-holes such as conscious, sub-conscious, unconscious etc might be the way psychologists that enabled them to create a structure, a skeleton which may or may not be the case in truth. All I am saying is that all of these 'constructs' are the creation of the so called conscious/waking/aware part of the mind. And thus, dream interpretation regardless of how convinced one is, remains a mixed bag of information, misinformation, some magic and some magical thinking and perhaps a few spices more.

Mind you that is true for nearly all divinations too, including the quasi-technical ones too.

Mind is an enigma that it cannot fathom by itself

Dear Rohini,

There are some of us who managed to bridge these worlds...  What is it with humanity in any case that they need to "pigeonhole" everything....sort sort sort, everything in tidy little boxes, labeled and named so we can make sense of it....LOL

I am not one to try and disect the hows and whys things work.  I am just interested in if they work....and it works for me....

If I had to spend my energy always asking why and how, what do I profit from that?  To me it's preferable to just be quiet in the knowledge that if dreams were obsolete, and non decypherable then Creator would not have used this as a means of communication between our sleeping and waking worlds.  (What's the point of remembering a dream if it's going to be an unsolvable puzzle anyway?)

Or if one's god is Evolution, why would the mind bother to evolve the memory in order that it may remember a thing such as a dream....

This is all too deep and complicated for a soul as simple as mine.  I am just happy that dreams and their interpretations work for me and I leave the hows and whys for the clever people who have the need to explain enigmas....

Dearest Raka,

Absolutely! I have no problem with individuals being able to bridge the two worlds, by which I think you mean the physical and spiritual. It is actually very common, though people that have done this are not aware. And that does not interfere with their ability to receive and blend information from the two realms, either. And I assume that is what you were saying too in the posting that I am replying to.

HOWEVER, for the sake of clarity, I was not referring to these two realms when I was talking about the conscious vs subconscious mind, which are not synonyms for the physical vs spiritual reality or realms!

But like you said, let us leave all that to those who are clever and commited. I mean 'dedicated' that is (to avoid someone misunderstanding the loaded 'commited' word) ;-}
