I will attempt to interprete your dream:

I had a dream as child that has stuck with me   I am in a dark place, it is not possible for me to determine the size of this place it simply is too dark.

Any time you find yourself in a dark or dimly-lit place, you are being warned that you are not enlightened in this area or this situation.  This implies you do not know all the facts, that there is more to this matter than you can see, a real need to get some light on the subject before going on.  The lack of light is a very significant symbol.  It may also mean that you are unenlightened concerning the "area" you are in and it may signify something you must face sooner or later.

The ground is dirt.  

Dirt or soil, is a potentially fertile environment for seeds to grow, and may depict that "something has the possibility to grow here".  It could also denote that you are standing with your feet firmly "planted in the soil", that you are grounded and safe while you are observing this enigmatic scene infront of you, that you are protected.

There is a sword and a grey skull on the ground.

A sword to me, depicts a weapon giving you power to either attack or defend as the need arises.  If it is a two edged sword, it may indicate that your choices to defend or attack may have repercussions for you.  A sword is also symbolic of the male energy and power, the creative and the piercing or cutting of a veil in order to expose what lies beyond.  Ceremonial swords and athames are tools used in magickal rituals and I suggest you go read up on their purpose from a reputable source.

I had a vision of a skull looking at me when I was 13, and since then I have received the ability to "transcend worlds and dimensions".  Since you had this in your dreams, it may be that "ancestral spirits" have opened a "Dream Path" for you to be able to do the same while you are sleeping.  It is different from Astral Travel, in the sense that you spontaneously will be able to do these things without focusing or meditating or attuning for it.  You will also be protected by the messengers that come to fetch you and will receive ancient wisdoms in your travels and your exposures to these dimensions.

I also see a grey pillar about 3 feet high it seems to be made of stone.  

A pillar is again a male symbol, perhaps someone who will become your "Pillar of strength" a supportive person or system who will help you along.  It may be a "short" person in this dimension, and since it is gray...neither white nor black, will be a balanced person who will support you in your discoveries.  
Gray could also mean that this person or support system will acknowledge both the light and dark sides of the path you will embark on and will be able to give you a balanced support throughout your experiences.

You mention that this pillar is made of stone....  This just confirms that this person or support system will be changeless, solid, dependable, an unbending foundation of truth.  

The objects are all close to each other.

These experiences are obviously interconnected and will either happen in conjunction, or rapidly following each other.

An aura of purplish color permeates the area of the objects I am looking at.

The colour purple in chakras would indicate your Crown Chakra from whence contact with your Higher Self and the Spiritual Realm is made.  This is obviously a Spiritual Path/Education and/or Experience that is waiting for you.
