It was on the racing track at Monaco I saw the car:

"What d'you think of her?" asked the Formula One driver as he ambled towards me and we both glanced at the incredible set of four wheel power surge that now lay still, yet potently dangerous even in its stillness.

"Well," I said, smiling at him, "your racing car is like life!"

"Life!" he said and for a moment I saw confusion and even a bit of disappointment on his face, "why life Bob?"

I looked at his young face and knew he wanted me to tell him about his car's magnificent looks, its remarkable speed and its awesome power but I didn't, "it reminds me of life," I said again, but this time I saw he was interested as he leaned against the beauty.

"Do you know how fast life goes?" I whispered, "I can still remember my first day of school, the day I entered college, when I got married, it's like it all happened yesterday. But life goes at a rip roaring pace and before you know what's happened, today is over, tomorrow's started, then the year, the decade and the century!"

"That's true!" said the Formula One driver, "I never thought of it like that though!"

"We don't," I said solemnly, "It's like you enter a race in this racing car and before you know the race is over!"

"And the winner is judged!"

"Yes," I said, "and to think that the winner has to make all the right moves, take all the turns with caution, yet not lose speed, overtake the other competitors all at lightning speed! Life's like that isn't it? Every moment counts!"

"Or," said the driver meaningfully, "every moment should count!"

We both stared at his car, and I grinned.

"What's the grin for?" he asked.

"And suddenly," I said, "your car is banged from the back!"

"And I go for a spin!"

"You can either turn turtle, get this wonderful machine damaged, you could get injured!"

"I've seen many!" shuddered the racer.

"And what happens?" I asked.

"The good driver, gets his car out of the spin, avoids the other cars, takes it to the side, gets the mechanics to work on it fast, gets his injuries attended to and he's off again!"

"And the bad driver?"

"Sometimes doesn't drive again! He loses his confidence, gets out of the race and goes home broken!"

"Now do you see what I mean?"

"Yes," said the race driver, "Its exactly what happens in life isn't it?"

"We are traveling smoothly down the road of life, everything going honky dory and bang, crash boom, we've been socked from behind, maybe a promotion that didn't come through, a death in the family, or a broken heart!"

"That's when you should be a good driver!"

"Just take time off, go to the side, take stock of your life, get yourself back in shape, and get right back on track."

"And win!" we both shouted.

I saw him suddenly pat his racing car, "You know something Bob, " he said, looking at me, "I'm not gonna look at my car the same way again, because..."

"Life is a racing car..!" we both shouted gleefully together, and I'm sure I saw that mean machine smile knowingly somewhere on that racing track in Monaco.
