Hi jamine68,

Welcome to Mystic Board.

For agoraphobia and claustraphobia I would recommend that you use either chamomile or neroli or ylang ylang, all thse oils are very calming and sedating and can help with stres and anxiety. But the main point is to find out which aspects are causing the fears. Frankincense is another that can help to calm , using the oils and breathing techniques can be very helpful in overcoming the hyperventilation too.

I was unable to find any articles to support the theory I'm about to offer, so implement at your own risk; I wonder if using rosemary oil as a conditioning aid might also help overcome phobias.  Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has been determined in medical studies to directly affect memory and recall.  Its use for this purpose is also passed down over centuries of herbal folklore and even referred to in classic literature (Shakespeare's "rosemary for remembrance"), so clearly people knew about this trait of the herb long ago.  I attended an aromatherapy seminar a few years ago where it was mentioned that rosemary is a good study aid because if you sniff it while you are studying and then later during your test you sniff something you've got the oil on, it helps your brain make the connection; this seems to me like a strong conditioning aid, and from this comes my idea.  One might possibly help condition a relaxation response by sniffing rosemary oil when one is in a a very peaceful, happy, secure situation to "set" the scent with the state, and then later in stressful circumstances, along with whatever relaxation blend you use, maybe try to concentrate on that feeling of well-being and sniff rosemary to help evoke the memory of peace.  My only hesitation would be that the rosemary might just help fix the memory of the stressful moment as well!  That wouldn't be helpful at all, so I am just tossing this out as an idea but I would take it with a few grains of salt; I'd love to know someone with more knowledge in field of psychological aromatherapy has anything to add.
