Some oils are very good for massage and have stimulating or relaxing properties. Clare Maxwell-Hudson in her "The Complete Book of Massage" explains that fragrances can have different notes accordint to how quicky it takes for the fragrance to evaporate. A "top note" evaporates very quickly after quite an initial impact, a "middle note" is mellow, while a "base note" last longer. I shall list here six among the most commonly used.
CHAMOMILE - Fruity, applelike. Middle note. Calming, soothing effect
EUCALYPTUS - Fresh and tangy. Top note. For coughs, colds and aching
JASMINE - Exotic and sweet. Base note. Antidepressant, said to speed up labour
LAVANDER - Fresh. Middle note. Antiseptic, analgesic, calming
ROSE - Sweet and luxurious. Middle note. Antiseptic, sedative, anti depressant
TEA TREE - Top note. Antiseptic, germicidal, fungicidal, soothing and healing. Treats cuts, burns, infections, pimples and boils.
